The Inspiring Legacy of an American Hero
In the aftermath of tragedy, it is human nature to seek meaning and purpose. After Pat Tillman tragically lost his life serving in Afghanistan in 2004, his family created a scholarship in his name to honor his legacy of self-sacrifice and support others dedicated to service. Since its inception, the Pat Tillman Foundation has awarded over $20 million to impact hundreds of lives, paying tribute to Tillman’s inspiring example.
Who Was Pat Tillman?
Pat Tillman walked away from a lucrative NFL contract with the Arizona Cardinals in 2002 to enlist in the U.S. Army alongside his brother Kevin. As an elite athlete graduating from Arizona State University summa cum laude, Tillman rejected fame and fortune to protect his country in the aftermath of 9/11. He became a symbol of patriotism and heroism, tragically killed by friendly fire at age 27.
The Pat Tillman Scholarship
Established in 2013, the Pat Tillman Foundation identifies “untapped potential” through a rigorous applicant vetting process. Recipients, called Tillman Scholars, receive $10,000 – $22,500 per year for up to three years while they complete their studies. In addition to financial support, scholars participate in leadership development conferences and service opportunities. The Tillman Foundation aims to identify future Changemakers dedicated to public service in government, military, or community nonprofits.
